Date: 15th and 16th July 2024
We, the Responsible AI Research Group, are delighted to hold a workshop, "Code the Future with AI, Girls!" for Y8 female students on July 15th and 16th to encourage women to make the leap into STEM courses! The event is mainly planned and will organise by the group's female members, Dr Debarati Chakraborty, Kuniko Paxton, Maneeha Rani, Tooba Zahed, Zeinab Dehghani, Razieh Arshadizadeh and Zahra Zehtabi Sabeti Moghaddam. We will focus on AI, which will gain further momentum and significance in the future.
Our workshop purpose and objectives
The incredible potential of AI is undeniable. It's revolutionizing fields everywhere, surpassing traditional programs and becoming a powerful tool for good.
However, the future of AI needs diverse voices, and right now, women are vastly underrepresented in the field. Recent statistics show a concerning trend: in the 2022-23 academic year, only 31% of STEM majors were women, with computer science dipping even lower at 23% [1].
When women are missing from the AI table, we miss out on a wealth of creativity and innovation. Women's perspectives are crucial for developing AI that is fair, unbiased, and reflects the needs of the entire population. Their lived experiences can help identify potential biases in algorithms and ensure AI is used for good.
This workshop aims to bridge that gap. We'll explore the fascinating world of AI, focusing on the critical role of ethics and the exciting career opportunities available in STEM, particularly in AI. We're here to inspire and empower female students to become the next generation of AI leaders, shaping a future powered by responsible and inclusive technology.
Workshop Sessions
The programme will include a lecture session on "What is AI?", interactive experience on different applications of AI like VR and robotics, and hands-on group activities. These activities are specifically designed to empower early teenage girls to explore the exciting world of AI. We'll delve into its potential, the importance of responsible development, and how they can be part of shaping the future of this technology.
